BEHR
NAUSICAAN MALE
AGE 38 HEIGHT 201 CM WEIGHT 132 KG PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Tall, even for a Nausicaan, Behr is a hulking figure with broad shoulders and a muscular frame. He looms over most humanoids and most certainly stands out in a crowd but he has a rather quiet nature and his presence is somewhat diminished by his soft and slow manner of speaking. He sports an unkempt, bushy mane of hair that has begun to seep across his face and must continuously be brushed out of his eyes; which are sunken and dark, revealing his rather tired and gentle manner. |
Behr wears a collection of baggy brown or grey tunics and working cargo
pants. Across the tunic, he usually wears a slim, metal brace, intended
to support his back. Over time, his posture has suffered a little due to
working in cramped conditions. He has little difficulty when moving
around but does struggle in smaller environments. He makes light of the
situation, however, and on the outside seems unhindered by the device.
PERSONALITY
In spite of his foreboding appearance, Behr is quiet and gentle, with little patience for conflict. Although he is private by nature, he does seek companionship and is willing to open up to those who show an interest. A keen interest in people is apparent and he is prone to watching others rather than taking the lead in conversation. Observing has been part of his life from a young age, it is through this behaviour that he has developed his sense of morality and his belief that aggression should always be a last-ditch solution to his problems.
To those who don't know him, he appears rather slow and dim-witted, which could not be further from the truth. He speaks in a drawn-out and deliberate manner but seems to struggle to pronounce words, often finding the wrong expression on the tip of his tongue. He has taught himself to speak Standard over the years. However, Behr has a sharp intellect and is very clever, even if there is no academic evidence to back this up. His love of engineering and science is clear and he is at his best when faced with a technical challenge.
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
A general working knowledge of mechanical, electrical and propulsion engineering make Behr an excellent ship’s technician. Aboard the Nausicaan ship Kylah, he was considered an outsider due to his unhealthy interest in the working parts of the vessel. Having now served aboard several cargo freighters of varying class within the alpha quadrant, he boasts a rather superior knowledge of engineering requirements and has the skills to back it up. Behr has worked for Cardassians, Ferengi, the Orion and several private traders in various capacities, although most dominantly in engineering. He also enjoys the work, relishing the opportunity to put those previously mentioned skills to use.
His overall strength is always handy to have around. Behr is large and bulky and has just the right muscle power to deal with difficult or heavy-duty work. It helped him significantly throughout his brief history as a loady before he began working on ship systems. His appearance is also threatening to those who don’t know him, which makes him ideal for posing as muscle. If pushed into a physical fight, he can gain the upper hand against two or three opponents rather quickly just by his sheer strength. Fortunately, his presence alone is usually enough to prevent a physical altercation, which suits Behr just fine.
Unfortunately, he suffers from an almost tragic naivety. Behr truly believes in the kindness of others and is willing to put his life on the line to test that aspect of sentient nature. He is not, necessarily, a coward but he generally abhors violence and has a tendency to forget that others do not feel the same way. He has been pushed around, bullied and manipulated countless times throughout his career, in particular by his own species, who are much less accommodating to those who are not thug-like in nature. With such a sensitive nature, he is open to deception and a close eye must be kept on him.
His slow manner of speaking, failure to understand expressions and slang and his careful and tactful approach to others is often seen as a hindrance to his progress. He sometimes needs time to process what has been asked of him before he can act, which can be detrimental in a crisis. As such, Behr works better under instruction rather than through his own instincts and often needs a guiding hand from his colleagues.
Qualifications: Chartered Federation (Freight) Cargo Systems Operator; Chartered Federation (Freight) Engineering Systems Technician; Chartered Ferengi Trade Service Operator; Qualified Cardassian Supply Services Ship Hand.
AMBITIONS
Behr seeks solidarity and equality amongst his peers. He is looking for a home where he is welcome, where he is not considered dim-witted or weak and is valued as much as anybody else. He needs a certain level of care and commitment and will repay that with his loyalty and hard work aboard any vessel. Whether that is hauling and storing cargo or repairing vessel engines, he is happy to fulfill his obligations. The crew of the Fawkes have mostly provided that for him.
HOBBIES & INTERESTS
Behr spends most of his time surrounded by the equipment in the engineering section of the freighter. He is at his happiest in that environment. Otherwise, he genuinely enjoys interacting with others, even if he is not the greatest of conversationalists or even as open as he should be. He will often seek out his colleagues to hear their stories or tell his own tales and seems happier when actually in the company of others, although he is often quiet and withdrawn, more inclined to watch and listen.
A fondness of physical exercise comes naturally to him, as it is inbuilt within his species. He needs room to stretch and unfurl his worn posture and can often be found happily doing pull-ups or lifting crates in the cargo areas just to keep his strength up. An interest in culinary work and cooking is also apparent, although his tastes tend to differ from his crew mates. He still attempts to use the kitchen to cook for others whenever permission is granted to him, even if the meals aren’t as palatable as he might think.
FAMILY
FATHER Kemahk, a privateer on Raiding Ship Kylah.
MOTHER B'neril.
BROTHER Brahm, a privateer on Raiding Ship Kylah.
EARLY LIFE
Growing up aboard a Nausicaan Raider is tough for most but torture for others. Not all Nausicaans are fans of violence, many have a capacity beyond the bloodthirsty and greedy nature of their species. Unfortunately Behr, son of the brave pirate Kemahk, fell into this unlikely category. Both he and his brother, Brahm, were born on the NRS Kylah whilst she was in service around the Almedi Nebula, just out with the main Federation/Klingon supply route. His father was one of the senior members of the group, in spite of his youth, and was both arrogant and merciless. He expected his sons to follow his lead and was pleased by Brahm’s eagerness but disappointed in Behr’s desire to avoid conflict.
The younger of the two brothers had a natural affinity for the technical aspects of the ship, work that was normally reserved for slaves and outlanders, as opposed to full-blooded Nausicaans. Over time, as he grew older and matured into what would be considered his teens, he was gradually forced to work in the lower decks of the ship, performing manual labor and technical work, all but disowned by his family. This continued for some years and Behr made the best of it. He avoided his father and brother’s scolding remarks and worked hard at learning his trade, becoming very competent with the old raiding ship’s engines and systems rather quickly.
When the vessel struck out at passing trade and was engaged in battle, he was often called upon to join front ranks, an aspect of his life that he truly detested. Behr was pushed to kill on many occasions, sometimes more viciously than he would have liked. He was not a skilled swordsman, nor was he good with firearms – as he had never taken the time to learn – but his abnormally large size and his bulk were always sought by the senior members of the pirate crew as a means of delivering incisive blows during raids. Behr would struggle to deal with these incidents but would act through fear of his own kind killing him. He was always easily threatened into committing acts of violence, despite openly protesting. He was never thanked for his part in such tasks but instead forced to carry loot and then pressed back down to the engineering decks.
FIRST PRIVATE WORK
Behr’s desire to find a better life was strong. He knew that Nausicaans were sought after as mercenaries and since there was no government hierarchy, they were free to move around the galaxy just as anybody else was. The trick was to gain his fathers and – more importantly – his brothers trust and have their permission to leave the family. He was still young, he still had much to learn, and he truly believed that a bond between family members was important on the vessel. Even if he was mocked and belittled, he presumed that his father and brother still expected him to work for them through trust and love, understanding how helpful he could be in the direst situations aboard the ship.
He made a break for it when the vessel docked at a free port trading station just on the outskirts of their area of operation. Whilst wandering a tavern at the station’s planetary level, he somehow managed to duck out through the crowd and escape through the civilian level to the industrial unit. He expected to be chased; he wasn’t. Nobody seemed to notice or care that he had left. Kylah departed the station without him. That night, he slept alone beside a large battery router in the lower sections of the station. Nobody bothered him. He maintains to this day that it was the most peaceful sleep of his life.
He found work quickly. Standing around the docking quay with the other mercenary workers was the trick. After only a couple of days of living rough, the personal assistant to an affluent, Betazoid private consort recruited him as a bodyguard. He joined the team and lived as an equal member of crew on the vessel. The work was undesirable but it paid well. In spite of the job’s nature, Behr found he rarely had to act in any violent capacity but merely would threaten or look menacing in order to ensure that clients and their colleagues behaved appropriately. The consort, with whom he never officially met – he would merely stand outside her quarters, wherever they may be – would often extend her gratitude for his services by adding extra payments and bonuses into his wage packet.
After almost a year aboard the vessel, he finally had the opportunity to spend the money he had gathered. He left the consort’s services and paid rent for a Federation sponsored home on Starbase 91, essentially his own place, for the first time. After enjoying a fully replicated meal, a comfortable sleep in a bed he could claim for himself and an even more luxurious breakfast, he began seeking work on the station. He was hired by a local freight firm and began training as a cargo operator from the station, learning the ins and outs of goods handling, from shipping to environmental systems.
Several years passed. Behr was happy. He received his official charter (paying good money for it) as a licensed cargo operator and expressed an interest in outside work. The firm posted him aboard the SS Yerman as an able loady and he spent time learning the finer points of the trade. His curiosity about the Gorman class Yerman’s engines peaked the interest of the freighter’s skipper, who permitted him to train as a technician’s mate with the craft’s chief engineer, an affable Bolian named Derehn – who was all but happy for the manual assistance provided by the large Nausicaan.
THE FREIGHT BUSINESS
For the next twenty years, Behr worked his way through the supply, trade and transport industry in various capacities. He picked up his charter as a Federation vessel engineer – having to sit the exam a couple of times first, paid for by money out of his own pocket. He learned quickly that specific qualifications, relatable to government organisations, guaranteed not only better work but also better pay. He was a skilled engineer; he had a real talent for keeping even the oldest, most beaten vessels afloat. He often worked with a partner, usually a more senior individual.
As the years passed he was hired from firm to firm. He was approached by Cardassian supply operatives from the Kasrah firm in the early 2380s and spent a year with them aboard the Groumal class Stinth, an experience that would prove especially useful in the future, when the crew of the Fawkes would hire him. Cardassian work was unappealing, he only lasted long enough to receive an official charter for them – as part of his desire to gather as many certifications as possible – and promptly left. The Union paid very little to their supply operators and the Cardassians on the vessel were not accommodating to his personality, viewing him with a mixture of disdain and disinterest.
He moved from the Union to the Alliance. The Ferengi Alliance. Behr had dealt with many Ferengi throughout his work so far and although he found them untrustworthy and generally unfair, he found them easily rattled and wasn’t afraid to feign a little bit of aggression to get his way. Work was lucrative, although the charter was expensive. But the bonuses and the extra shift allowance paid to shipboard operators was desirable. He would have stayed had there been more work but somehow their opportunities came in waves. After only a year, he left the Alliance and returned to Federation space, where he found work with a firm based at Vega colony.
FAWKES
Behr was between jobs and enjoying a week to himself on Deep Space Nine when he first noticed the Fawkes docked at the station. His fascination with the large freighters had not diminished despite the years since he had worked for the Union. He wondered why such a vessel would be left in the hands of the Federation and considered that it may have a private owner. It was at the quayside, where he was surveying the vessel, that he was first noticed by Ryan Warner.
