RYan warner
HUMAN MALE
AGE 28 HEIGHT 178 CM WEIGHT 72 KG PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Ryan is somewhat baby-faced and has a youthful appearance, which poorly represents his age. Choosing not to cut his hair hasn't helped matters. The long blonde hair and bright blue eyes give the impression of innocence, belying his rather shrewd and incisive nature. He stands slightly above average height and maintains a lean and lightly toned physique, though he is not physically very strong or athletic. He has an unusually tanned complexion, despite spending most of his life in space which contrasts with his bright hair and facial features and gives the vivid impression that he is healthier than he actually is. |
Ryan exudes arrogance in his mannerisms, often with a rather vacuous-looking expression on his face, his shoulders slumped and his speech a
varied collection of slurs and slang words. He seems, almost at all
times, disinterested in his surroundings and there is a distinctly
bitter attitude lurking beneath his exterior. He speaks with a
pronounced and very obvious Australian accent, which almost perfectly
mirrors his estranged father’s tone. He is considerably attractive,
having been dubbed a 'pretty boy' throughout most of his short adult
life, but beyond a preference for shaving frequently, he puts very
little effort into his personal appearance.
PERSONALITY
A melting pot of child resentment, untamed rebelliousness and painful regret, Warner is an emotionally complex young man man with a great deal of baggage. His penchant for flying off the handle at the slightest personal infraction not only makes him appear wild to those who don't know him but is the reason for most of his mistakes in life, of which there are a great many. He is brash and thoughtless, with poor impulse control, and frustratingly self-centered at times. He oozes a strong sense of self-confidence and arrogance.
In spite of his emotional immaturity, he is a loyal ally and not a bad option to have in your back pocket. Ryan's ability to find friendships in the strangest of places is somewhat remarkable. His witty, delightfully crude sense of humour and his self-confidence can rub off on others and there is, without a doubt, an almost charming naivety about him that can be hard to resist. He is decisive and unafraid to stand by his convictions, which, in the right circumstances, is very admirable.
Warner is almost gifted and is exceptionally intelligent, although this often remains unseen due, in part, to his boisterous exterior and his immaturity. He seems unwilling to open up to others and to most it is clear that his brash personality is merely a front, protecting a thoughtful and well-meaning individual beneath. For all of his faults he remains and consistently unflappable individual, unafraid of a challenge and willing to face even his greatest fears without hesitation.
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
Although he is not aware of the fact, Warner is considered to be one of the top pilots of auxiliary craft to have graduated from Starfleet Academy. He flew in the school’s illustrious ‘Nova Squadron’ and went on to fashion some incredibly well-versed piloting skills, which he took to his career as an officer and coxswain on starship duty. From this, and short periods of personal practical flight study, he gathered much of his extra technical knowledge in astronautics and developed into a talented space pilot.
Some extensive studying and a varied background knowledge of the quadrant have sharpened his skills in navigation and Ryan is proud to say that he generally knows the inner systems like the back of his hand. He was previously assigned to the Ninth Fleet and came to understand the Romulan neutral zone and patrol zones better than most of his fellow officers. He has a balanced knowledge of most political and legal restrictions and procedures regarding space travel in the quadrant.
His quick-thinking nature has turned him into the ideal problem solver at the peak of a crisis. He relishes his work. Ryan has the capacity to shake fear and stare death straight in the face; he does not hesitate and is, therefore, willing to take risks in order to get the job done. There is an extensive creative spark which aids in this; Ryan often knows no boundaries and will go to some extreme and unusual lengths to keep a vessel intact when there are difficulties ahead. He is incredibly confident in his own abilities and is always thinking one step ahead.
This creative side and impulsive methodology often feed his ego, which has slowly become a burden for Ryan over the years. He is often too bold, making rash decisions and pursuing risky options on an impulse rather than balancing the potential positive and negative effects of his choices. This self-confidence and egocentric manner leads him down the path of trouble and insubordination, and as a Starfleet officer, his capabilities were put into question extensively over the years. He missed out on the opportunity to further his career and put lives at risk, leading to his burn out with the fleet.
Warner has developed a bitter and resentful nature which can surface at the worst possible moments. He is often vindictive in matters of diplomacy and is nursing an inner anger that may take some time to subside. In spite of his calm, balanced approached when working, his emotional instability constantly needs to be monitored for fear of him saying or doing the wrong thing in the wrong company.
AMBITIONS
Ryan has yet to really understand his potential. He rests with ease at the helm of the Fawkes and is clearly comfortable with his role there but what Ryan really needs to do is grow up. He needs to put his past behind him and make peace with his family. He is in desperate need of a suitable mentor, a friend who can guide him in the strategy of common sense.
HOBBIES & INTERESTS
A tobacco smoker and heavy drinker, Ryan generally spends most of his free time either buzzed on nicotine or drunk. He likes to hang out in bars and clubs when on stations or ashore on planets and sample the alcoholic treats on offer there. He has a rather particular taste in modern rock music, he plays and owns a couple of guitars, and likes to sample venues that offer live music.
When not indulging in his vices, he genuinely enjoys engrossing himself in navigational data and books on the subject of physics and space flight. He can often be obsessive when it comes to studying, though he rarely shares that with his peers. Always seeking to present himself as rebellious and uncaring, he is seemingly shameful of his contemplative side, the side which seeks education and knowledge.
FAMILY
FATHER Houston Warner, freighter captain, owner of SS Jennifer.
MOTHER Jennifer Darlene Warner, deceased.
BROTHER Christian Morgan Warner, first mate, SS Jennifer.
COUSIN Mathenwy Eidelwel.
EARLY LIFE (2360-78)
Ryan can remember very little of his life before his father bought a cargo freighter and took to space. He was only a toddler when his mother passed away, lost in a rock slide during a hiking trip that she and his father had undertaken whilst they vacationed somewhere in the Midwestern United States. His memories only really sharpen from the age of about five onwards, when they materialize aboard SS Jennifer (named after his mother), a freelance cargo freighter transporting materials and goods from Earth to merchants all around the quadrant. Jennifer only maintained a crew of around six or seven, despite her massive bulk most of which was made up of large cargo storage systems which could replicate different environments when required. The crew was ever changing apart from the three core members, Houston Warner and his two sons, Christian and Ryan.
His childhood was rather carefree. The small vessel roamed various star systems, occasionally making a long stop on Earth or a neighboring planet. Ryan spent most of his youth on the ship. He and his brother studied using the ship’s computerized education programs. With the supervision of their father, they became avidly self-taught, and thanks to planetary drop-offs and passing crew members, even more aware of life beyond the freighter.
Ryan and Christian shared a typical sibling rivalry; whilst Ryan was more outspoken and brash, like their father, Chris was rather reserved and careful in his nature, and as an older brother often felt compelled to chastise and take care of Ryan. They did care deeply for each other, and although they had the opportunity to meet different children of their own age during stop-offs on other worlds, they often found that they were the best company for one another.
Ryan gradually developed the same self-assured approach to life that his father had, sharing a close relationship with Houston that Christian did not. As the boys grew into adolescence, they slowly found themselves integrated with work aboard the freighter. They would ship cargo and dutifully take on shipments alongside their father. Ryan soon learned the basics of piloting and would often take the helm, eager to experience what he could of the vessel. As he grew into his adolescence, he became Jennifer’s full-time pilot, often taking charge of the small auxiliary craft (used for making short-range pick-ups on certain planets). It was a way of life he slowly settled into.

STARFLEET ACADEMY (2378-82)
MAJOR Astronavigation, Computer Science MINOR Advanced Piloting, Astrometrics Warner entered the Academy following an argument with his family. It wasn't uncommon for him to be at odds with his father or brother, but during a short vacation in Melbourne he finally took things a step further. He had always had the inkling to join Starfleet; a secret tugging of the brain reminding him that he was capable of much more than steering a bulky cargo freighter through the safer regions of the Alpha Quadrant. |
He applied after taking a shuttle trip to the States and walked into an information centre in San Francisco. He was told he would need a recommendation from a senior Starfleet officer. Within three days of keying subspace transmissions and messages, an admiral informed Ryan of a personal scholarship plan which he was preparing to run. They spoke for a short time. The admiral forwarded his letter of recommendation. Warner sat for his Academy entrance tests two days later.
Warner was a popular cadet, well known and somewhat loved by his class. He was at every social function, formal and casual, and attended almost every sporting event that his schedule would permit him time to enjoy. He played left hook for the rugby team and third batsman for the Kahmjal squad, forging friendships in each sport. His studies never suffered, although he was often late for class and rude to certain instructors. There was little that could be said against him, despite his attitude; he passed each examination and standardized test and soared through practical flight examinations each year, moving into his minor qualifications with ease. He had a knack for studying late and learning within his own time; one that guaranteed him desired space to play with the rules of his instructors. Of course, his smug nature worsened.
His competence made him a standout student while his reckless behaviour and arrogant nature often cost him credit awards and achievements. Warner always knew better, he always had an answer, no matter how complex or rhetorical the question might be. He still pushed on academically and excelled in the field, expanding his interests in flight control and developing a talent for reverse engineering.
He never took any joy in military doctrine, and certainly struggled with diplomacy. In his attitude there was always marked potential for improvement; potential that he never realized. Regardless, Warner graduated eleventh in his class, second in his Advanced Piloting course. He moved into the active ranks of Starfleet, bound for duty aboard a vessel.

USS MIRACLE 2382-84
RANK Ensign; Lieutenant Junior Grade RATING Coxswain/Reserve Flight Deck Manager; CFCO MERITS Commendation (Ribbon of Courage, Oct 2383) promotion (exemplary/time served, 9 Oct 2383) As control manager in the USS Miracle shuttle bay, Warner assumed the management of auxiliary craft, setting engineering schedules and maintaining shuttle capability when he wasn’t due to fly simple assignments back and forth from ship to star base, terrestrial port or location. He remained with Miracle for two years, quickly earning a reputation as an assertive and self-assured young pilot. He moved carefully up through the ranks, and any trouble he caused was quiet and far enough removed from the COC to keep him off disciplinary radar. He joined the CONN team, maintaining a spot on the night watch, when the crew was least active. Slowly he progressed to more active shifts until regular rotation provided him an opportunity to take the assistant flight control officer role. |
Later he was forced to man the helm during a skirmish with Talarian pirates. With his superior officer wounded and unable to return to duty for several months, Ryan was awarded the position permanently and was later promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade. It was then that his personality erupted: Warner’s overzealous and reckless nature was noticed by the command staff. He would usually find himself commended one moment and reprimanded the next; it wasn’t long before he found himself desperately seeking a transfer to a new assignment.
USS DAEDALUS 2384-88
RANK Lieutenant Junior Grade; Lieutenant
RATING Chief Flight Control Officer
MERITS Promotion (exemplary service, 19 Dec 2387)
DEMERITS Court martial (property theft; conduct unbecoming; AWOL, 27 Feb 2388);
demotion (non-judicial, 1 Mar 2388)
Warner sought a fresh start when he joined the crew of USS Daedalus, determined to savor the opportunity to explore the components and maneuvering capability of an Anubis-class starship. The class had interested him greatly since he began his career in as a qualified pilot; once again he settled in nicely and without complication. He swiftly made several friends and was generally accepted by the senior staff. While he was often obnoxious and at times could let his ego get the best of him, he seemed competent and eager; in fact, his impulsive nature often earned him compliments. Unfortunately, that same impulsive behaviour eventually landed him in a lot of trouble.
Whilst on leave shortly following his promotion to lieutenant, and returning to Earth to visit several friends from his Academy days, Warner, along with several crew members, commandeered one of Daedalus's Type 11 shuttles and flew to the planetary drop-off point, instead of signing it over to Fleet Operations. The group made a personal excursion. For several days the shuttle's absence went unnoticed; then a crewman reported it missing on Earth. Warner's group was apprehended by USS Roosevelt only a few light years from Risa, their intended destination.
The resulting punishment began as a court martial; it ended mercifully for Warner, however, when the admiral who had overseen his scholarship intervened on his behalf. The charge was reduced to non-judicial punishment. He was promptly demoted to junior lieutenant and scheduled for reassignment.
In lieu of this decision, and despite his conduct still bitterly angry at Starfleet, Warner resigned his commission. The judicial board responsible for his reprimand and demotion assigned him a dishonorable discharge. Warner left Starfleet behind, vowing never again to work for them.
