ERNS OLMQUIST
HUMAN MALE
AGE 44 HEIGHT 178 CM WEIGHT 72 KG PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Olmquist is a lean, almost gaunt human male in his mid forties. He has a fleshless angular face with spare features, thin nose and mouth, high cheekbones and deep set eyes with minimal eyebrows. His hair is brown and verging on shaggy with flecks of gray. He does not take utmost care of himself, shaves and showers irregularly, can go for a week wearing the same threadbare clothes and often smells of alcohol or and so his appearance can be off-putting at times. He has a heaviness about him and a vestige of unused strength. He wears old-fashioned tortoiseshell spectacles because he is farsighted and lived for several years after leaving Starfleet in a part of the sector where modern technologies were discouraged. |
He became used to this and his reluctance to change his habits meant that he never had his vision corrected. Olmquist looks and sounds very serious and humorless with a dry husky voice and almost no expression or inflection. He only looks amused by absurdity and the blackest humor.
PERSONALITY
Very principled and loyal personality crippled by personal failure, melancholy, addiction and cynicism. He is not a dashing wisecracking rogue or a callow youth, just a mature man who has lost too much to love life and so retreated into himself. Most of his friends have abandoned him not because he was cruel or indifferent to them but because he has no sympathy or patience for himself. He sees himself as a lost cause and will not kill himself but is content to die slowly by unhappiness and self neglect.
Smart and observant but his wits are often dulled by drugs and alcohol. Most of the time he is extremely quiet, a real listener and content to let younger more ambitious people take the spotlight. He does not mind getting his hands dirty and has limited respect for the sanctity of life. He does not like suffering or domination or cruelty or even theft, but he is extremely pragmatic and believes that murdering and lying is justifiable in war.
Olmquist is not the type to sell out his friends or his principles. He is badly cracked but not really ruined. He does not want to work hard but he respects those who do especially when they are working for a good cause in life. He is a Federation patriot and respects Starfleet but understands limitations of big government.
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
Addicted to smoking, alcohol and prescription drugs usually in combination. He has been hospitalized a few times over the years for overdoses but will make no longer make an effort to rehabilitate himself. He has no special philosophy about living hard and dying young he just doesn't care enough about his life to deny himself mood altering substances. The only thing he will not use is serious narcotics because he disapproves of the violence of the drug trade although he does retain a few connections to it.
In some ways he is very conservative, he respects family and hard work and small town values. He agrees with the Fahleena prohibitions on advanced technology. Dislikes politics diplomacy and business and avoids social situations believing that crowds are the opposite of individuals and can't be reasoned with. Olmquist has read a great deal including literature and art especially orchestral music but he doesn't show off his knowledge unless he is stoned.
He was a medical doctor and pathologist for many years and still retains a lot of that knowledge but has gotten rusty where real medical treatment is concerned. More than anything else he is a logical thinker, he can sound like a Vulcan at times and does not have a problem debating ethical questions with others. Philosophy and ethics is very much on his mind at all times. He does not want to make the galaxy a worse place than he found it.
AMBITIONS
None whatsoever. He is medicating himself to slow death. He would like a place to live where there is no one to tell him what to do, a tropical island with native girls and abundant rum drinks and no names or pasts to explain. He has no interest in achieving anything and can not stomach ambitious people in general.
HOBBIES & INTERESTS
Drugs by default. He uses tobacco, alcohol, prescription medications of all kinds. He even experiments with new drugs and keeps abreast of all new types on the street. Expert on different varieties of distilled liquors and mixology.
He appreciates shuttles and knows how to fly a few models including Starfleet models. He is a speed freak who prefers the freedom and flexibility of orbital craft. He has taken courses in defensive piloting. He also has spent time on traditional sailboats and motorcycles. He likes to gamble on races and sports but these days can not afford it.
Erns reads compulsively including on subjects he hates like political and military history. He has an interest in ancient medical techniques and has had a chance to develop limited surgical skills using primitive tools like thread, syringes and scalpels. He collects old medical tools and specimens as a hobby.
FAMILY
FATHER Horst Olmquist, an ornithologist.
MOTHER Tabari Mi'raj, deceased.
SISTER Isra Maq'qit Olmquist, a comparative religion scholar.
EARLY LIFE (2344-62)
Born and raised at Benecia Colony where his family managed a funeral home and two cemeteries, including a small military cemetery. Erns was a normal talkative child until he reached five or six when he began to be more and more withdrawn. He had a difficult time socializing with other children and was an unfocused student until sixth or seventh grade when he began to excel academically. In the higher forms he had less success due to the stress he felt in peer groups and elected to test out of his final year of public school. He had an unusually beautiful girlfriend during his last school year and the pathetic failure of that relationship left a long shadow on his emotional life during his last few years as a teenager.
Erns has always had a difficult time managing stress and makes friends with difficulty. He keeps everything inside and his memory even for trivial mistakes and failures is almost perfect. He ruminates endlessly over every bad decision, even the ones he made as a small child and thinks of himself as a failed human being because he does not take a lot of joy in life and has problems controlling his temper. He began smoking when he was sixteen. He did not have his first drink until eighteen. In sports he excelled at soccer, tennis and high jump but in academics his only outstanding subjects were science and history.

CIVILIAN CAREER (2362-73)
Erns was accepted as a pre-med student to Bradbury-Charite in 2362. He spent four years there fulfilling his requirements for medical school and made three good friends and had two or three notable relationships during this time. He experimented with alcohol and drugs but was not yet attached to them. He did well in his science courses, less well in math, and enjoyed social sciences courses as well briefly flirting with the idea of a career in anthropology. In 2366 he transferred to University of Tarsus VI Graduate School of Medicine and met his best friend Johan Bornholm in the second week of school. In his third year he began to date Johan's ex-girlfriend Honora Gates, another student. Erns did best in pre-clinical sciences and concentrated on anatomic and forensic pathology in his clinical rotations. |
During this period he still had very limited interaction with drugs and alcohol. His Doctor of Medicine studies required another four years as well as a one year specialized fellowship in forensic pathology. By 2371 he was a licensed pathologist and acquired a resident position at Synod Federation Hospital on Kazar. He became very interested in Kazarite osteopathic theory during his residency and human esper training, but did not stray from his discipline. He married Honora Gates in 2372 following a two-year engagement. He completed his residency in late 2372.
In 2373 the Cardassians and the Klingons began a shooting war that swept through the Alpha Quadrant sectors that Erns had spent his entire life in. He moved with Honora to Starbase 47 and watched as the Federation and Dominion were drawn into the conflict. He decides to enlist in Starfleet following the decimation of the Seventh Fleet by the Dominion.

STARFLEET CAREER 2374-84
Erns received a direct commission in the Starfleet Medical Corps following the twelve-week Officer Basic Leadership Course at the Starbase 11 Medical Department Center. He was assigned to Majestic-class USS Wendigo in the Fifth Fleet for his first duty assignment and went with the combined fleet from Starbase 375 to retake Deep Space 9 from the Cardassians in Operation Return. USS Wendigo was seriously damaged in the fighting along with much of the fleet but most of its crew survived. In late 2374 he was separated from his wife and reassigned to USS Gujarat to bolster the Tenth Fleet's efforts to rebuild damaged facilities in the Kalanda sector. In mid-2375 Erns was part of the effort to assist Klingon forces recovering after a serious defeat at Monac IV. He made a few Klingon friends. |
He also began to drink more heavily, especially after the Breen entered the war on the side of the Dominion. His wife was killed along with countless others following the sweep of the Breen forces through undefended Federation facilities following the Second Battle of Chin'toka. He is reassigned once more to the Fifth Fleet and takes part in the Ross Offensive against Cardassia, where he is seriously wounded in the back. He spent the rest of the war recovering at Starbase 211.
In 2376 he is promoted to full lieutenant and assigned to a three-year series of relief efforts on different colonies and facilities affected by the war, including two Klingon facilities. This is a difficult and lonely period for Erns as he has time to mourn his wife and to become increasingly moved by the active nihilism of Klingon warrior culture. He ceases to believe in the ideals of the Federation and the effectiveness of diplomacy. He is struggling with alcohol by 2379 and is pulled off the line to enter a treatment program. Following his treatment he is stationed on Station 6-6 as an anatomic pathologist attached to the Science Corps studying Ketracel.
In 2381 at the age of thirty-seven he is made a Lieutenant Commander and assigned to USS Miracle to become Assistant Chief Medical Officer. He has a two-year relationship with a nurse that ends badly. He is using prescription medications by now, gets caught and by '84 has been bumped back down to lieutenant and had his medical license suspended. In an effort to develop more constructive interests during his treatment he studies small craft piloting and meets Ryan Warner and several other pilots. He reads about Fahleena culture during this time and decides to leave Starfleet two or three months after Ryan Warner is transferred to USS Daedalus.
POST-MILITARY LIFE 2384-88
Erns moved to Fahleena III in order to start a new life as a civilian osteopath in a culture that has restricted advanced technology and warfare He spent three years trying to make himself a better person and doctor and forget everything that had happened to him. He studies archaic medicine and homeopathy but can not successfully rediscover the inspiration he felt as a young resident learning about ESP and metaphysics on Kazar. Nothing in his universe makes sense even the possibility of an afterlife or alternate realities. He spends a lot of time reading about scientific studies on the nature of reality and wonders for a while if everyone is mad. Even with alternative realities friction and oxidization ruin any possibility of happiness. Life is a series of pychotic dreams that blend into each other at random. Erns starts to drink again. His desire for a simple life is complicated by Fahleena's higher mortality rates.
In 2387 he moved back to Deep Space Nine to go on an eight-month bender where the booze and drugs are cheap and nobody asks any questions. It is a joke to him that the Federation fought so hard to retake the wormhole because in forty years it has brought no peace or happiness to anyone. He has an idea that the Prophets are the closest thing to a better, more powerful reality since they were able to easily destroy Dominion reserve forces with no losses to themselves. He wants to commune with them, but he is also afraid of being rejected. He still loves his wife Honora but feels like he let her down. He wants to be close to something but he doesn't have anything to give. He does not trust himself. He is moving closer and closer to the edge.
