ANIB-BAUR 'AIBE' ECBE
BAJORAN FEMALE
AGE 20 HEIGHT 175 CM WEIGHT 52 KG PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Aïbe is a baby giraffe built of bones and awkward angles she doesn't know what to do with. Her long hair naturally is as dark as her eyes but she prefers to bleach it. She has the nasal cartilage ridges of her kind and splinter scars on her elbows and knees. She dresses in old clothes and engineer boots and does not take care of her few possessions. Aïbe is little more than a kid and has plenty of adolescent awkwardness left to work through. She rarely brushes her hair and her shoelaces are usually broken. Most of her clothes are missing buttons or are worn out at the knees. Aïbe does not speak very often and in general appears very shy and spaced out with the haziness of a psychedelic drug casualty. |
PERSONALITY
She exhibits very little personality most of the time. Aïbe has had a strange and embarrassing life and keeps so much to herself she rarely registers in group conversations. She does not exhibit a great deal of spirituality and her history has made her skeptical of major aspects of Bajoran culture and attitudes.
Aïbe is not comfortable with herself or others. She jokes around at times but is not very good at it and most of her stabs at humor fall flat or make sense only to her. She shows many indications of not having socialized properly as a child and can fluctuate between stubborn and apathetic to an aggravating degree.
Her personality is still evolving. She intensely dislikes her entire family but becomes very peevish about the way they were treated and holds a vague grudge against the current Bajoran political establishment. Most of the time Aïbe wants to be left alone with her thoughts. Unlike some solitary people she does not long to be loved or even understood.
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
Aïbe is not good at many things but growing up on freighters has made her useful at basic technical work like monitoring environmental and life support systems and spotting related problems. She is a haphazard worker and is most voluble when the alternative is strenuous labor. Like most adolescents she is far more interested in wasting time and contemplating her navel than applying her mind to a profession.
She can usually tell when a gauge is broken and has some understanding of the effects of changing pressure and oxygen levels on bodies and bulkheads. She was never involved in loading cargo, piloting, or tactics. She has swabbed plenty of decks over the years and would make an able wiper or oiler if she applied to the Merchant Marine but has not reached the aptitude of a real engineering mate. She would rather take advantage of the Federation welfare system and enjoyed living on Deep Space Nine where there was nothing important to do and no one to criticize her habits.
AMBITIONS
No major ambitions. She was forced to learn everything she knows and still makes no effort to retain knowledge. Aïbe is not stupid but she is not precious about life and shrugs at the values of educated people.
HOBBIES & INTERESTS
Aïbe likes to eat and cut up magazine pages to make collages. There are certain activities like dominoes and bowling that fascinate her almost to the extent of studying them. She would be very interested in card tricks and magic if she ever met anyone who knew those activities. Math and science are all right and animals are good but sitting around talking about politics or economics or warfare is the dullest imaginable.
FAMILY
FATHER Anïb Hothmonok, a lawyer. MOTHER Baur Gosud, a landowner.
CHILDHOOD (2368-84)
Aïbe is the daughter of former sympathizers of the Alliance for Global Unity, also known as the Circle which attempted to overthrow the Bajoran Provisional Government in 2370. AGU's chief aim was the expulsion of all alien influence on Bajoran politics and culture and for a while it enjoyed the support of a large number of the public. When hero Li Nalas was assassinated in 2372 and news spread that the Circle had been procuring arms from allies of the Cardassians opinion turned against it and many members were forced to go underground.
During the Dominion War the family took shelter on Trivas with other AGU supporters and actual members protected to a limited extent by a dovish faction within the Cardassian government. It was only three years in hiding but when they finally came back to Bajor they found the culture radicalized and massively supportive of the Federation.
Though Aïbe's parents were only material and political supporters of AGU and not directly involved in any deaths related to the coup they were disgraced in Bajoran society. Hothmonok's firm fired him and the family was forced to survive on the rents from Gosud's inherited properties. Aïbe encountered a significant amount of prejudice from the community and was taught to see Bajor as a lost cause and its people seduced by foreign ideals. She accepted some of this as truth but also grew to resent her parents for making her unwelcome in her own country. Her ambivalent feelings persist to this day.
In 2380 Hothmonok secured work as a lawyer and lobbyist for the Jeraddo Mining Corporation and the family relocated to Ashalla. He was frequently charged with leading government junkets to Jeraddo and would sometimes take his wife and Aïbe along for working vacations. Aïbe enjoyed space travel since it got her out of the suffocating climate of politics and introduced her to foreign species. She visited Deep Space 9 more than once and begged her parents to let her attend school there. Of course this was against their philosophical beliefs but her father's employers encouraged her and her father was ultimately too worried about jeopardizing his career to resist their urging. This drove a wedge between Aïbe's parents and in some ways they were glad to see the creator of so much family tension gone from the household.
Aïbe spent about two years studying on Deep Space 9 but discovered she was more interested in independence than she was in education. She spent more and more time with an older crowd and looked for opportunities to escape. Not long after she turned 16 her chance finally came.

CAREER (2384-88)
A friend of hers connected with the freight business set Aïbe up with a no-questions-asked ordinary deckhand job on a Talassian mineral container ship. She began her three-year career going from different freighter to different freighter picking up the odd skill but limited formal training. She was usually deemed to fragile for heavy labor and would usually end up monitoring systems especially environmental control systems. These systems eventually came something of a specialty. She had no emotional attachment to environmental control but it was something she could do. By the time she landed on Deep Space 9 in the fourth quarter of 2387 she had worked on seven different freighters. |
Aïbe had saved up a few latinum strips by then and decided to settle down on the station for a while. She was old enough to make adult friends but spending her adolescence around deck hands and engineers had made her wild and resentful of authority. She spent most of her savings on alcohol and opiates and was ripped off by so-called friends more than once. Eventually her bad behavior and lack of self-control cost her welfare privileges and she took shelter in garage B-15 with a soft-hearted acquaintance named Erns Olmquist.
